So the story behind Place Stanislas is that the king of Poland Stanislaus was exiled and he ended up in France because his son-in-law happens to be King Louis XV. Because of his connection to the king of France, he was made duke of Nancy and he set about building Nancy into a royal city. One of his crowning achievements is the construction of Place Stanislas, which is supposedly dedicated to his son-in-law King Louis VI. Maybe it didn’t have that name before but it would have been strange to dedicate a square to the king with your name on it. The square is now one of the main attractions of the city of Nancy.
The square is surrounded by magnificent buildings, a royal opera, city hall, and then modern hotels. The square appears to be nice place to people watch and they know it. There are tables laid out outside the buildings. I think it would be nice to have lunch of dinner here if it weren’t for it being winter time. I still see people having breakfast here. At the very center of the square is a statue of the man himself, Stanislaus. It isn’t very large but it is there. They also put up the Christmas tree near the statue as well.
