I decided to do a day trip from the city of Strasbourg to the nearby city of Nancy. I haven’t heard of the place before but it seems like it is a rather large city in this region. I don’t think the train from the previous day passed through Nancy. There is a UNESCO World Heritage site here in the city of Nancy and intend to visit it. I don’t think I would be spending much time here though but I think I will just play it by ear. As you would expect, Gare de Nancy is a large train station meant to serve a large city like Nancy. The lobby looks quite modern but it doesn’t have that feeling of size unlike Strasbourg’s train station.
I quickly got out of the train station to get my bearings and it was only then that I realized how large the station is. Over the years the station has been enlarged from its original structure to the one we see now. I think it is a very common story for a lot of train station in Europe. I can see how it was expanded to be able to handle more passengers. After all, you do not want your passengers to be waiting in the cold. There are naturally several facilities in the station as well including the ever present Relay. I like how a lot of effort was made to keep the original structure. Usually the facade would be retained while the expansion happens elsewhere. In the case of Gare de Nancy, the main entrance was moved to the expansion while the old entrance is still functional.
