I unexpectedly found myself in what is Strasbourg biggest attraction – Petite France. This area used to be where all the smelly industries were found. Tanneries, millers and fisheries were all here. This didn’t make this area a nice place to be in. As Strasbourg progressed, these industries eventually died out leaving behind the houses we see today. The houses are very attractive and they have been restored to perfect condition. Some of them function as restaurants these days and I think it makes for a very good spot for a restaurant. It looks like these buildings are the stuff of storybooks which is why I was surprised to know that they still exist.
Petite France was the main reason why I wanted to go Strasbourg in the first place. Then I found out that it has other events happening that month too so I thought it would be good to spend a few days here. Petite France isn’t just limited to this small area but it spans almost a quarter of the Grand Île. However, I think the immediate area of the canal is where the nicest buildings are. As you move further away, you see more modern structures. I was very lucky to find this place immediately since the weather was very good. I think if I arrived any later, the light wouldn’t have been as good since the sun would be much lower in the sky.
