When I first arrived in Épernay, I was planning on just taking photos of the various wine houses that are along the Avenue de Champagne. I knew that they have wine tasting tours here and I thought that that was probably something expensive and since I’m not really a drinker, I didn’t think it would be worth going to. When I went to visit the tourist office of Épernay, I was told that there are a few wine houses that are open that Sunday and three of them offer tours. I was told that people go to Épernay to do the wine tasting tour and it would be a shame if I didn’t go.
So I thought I might as well do it. When I went to the Moët and Chandon wine tasting tour booking desk, I was met by French speaking staff member, when she found out I was speaking English, her accent totally changed to one which is very English. I was shocked at the sudden change of accent and demanded to know what she did with that lady I was talking just now. She is, in fact, English, but she came here for work. After a minute of laughs, she managed to get me a slot for the 2pm tour and it wasn’t as exorbitant as I thought it would be. I think the difference is the number of glasses you have at the end of the tour. I cannot afford to get drunk all the way out in Épernay since I still have to take a train back to Reims. So I think it is good that I got on the one which gives only a single glass of champagne at the end of the tour.
