I thought that even though I missed the my train from to Reims to Épernay, I still think that I arrived a little early. I would probably play it by ear and see how much I can see here. Épernay is a small town outside of Reims. It sits at what is probably France’s most famous vineyards. But before we talk all about that, I got out of the train station and needed to figure out where to go. I saw a sign pointing to where I needed to go and decided to follow it, hopefully, it won’t be that far. Once I hit the main roundabout, I noticed that there is an attractive church here. This is probably the town largest church – Church of Notre Dame d’Épernay.
The Church of Notre Dame d’Épernay is fairly large considering that it is in a town. Then again, most of the churches I have seen in France so far have been much larger than I thought was necessary. The church is relatively new by French standards having been built at the start of the 20th century. Like a lot of structures at the time, the church was heavily damaged by war and had to be repaired. The church has a combination of Romanesque and Gothic features which seems to be a common style in this area. I wasn’t able to get in the church since the doors seemed to be locked. I decided to just continue my exploration of the town of Épernay.
