I was kind of glad that I miscalculated how often the train I needed departs from Reims. I suddenly found time to explore the area around the Gare de Reims train station. It turned out that there is an ancient Roman monument here called the Porte de Mars. There is a large park here which seems to be popular for the locals. It was still early in the morning and there are already people walking here. The Les Hautes Promenades is a promenade just outside the train station is it makes for a good place to relax right in the middle of the city. At the time of my visit, it was almost Christmas, so they have several Christmas themed shops set up here. It is slightly different from the full blown Christmas market since this one is a little more spread out, or to used a more modern term, socially distant.
It was still morning and some of the shops weren’t even open. Others were in the process of opening and they seem to have customers already. I like these types of shops since it is the locals who would be setting up shop here selling locally made goods. If they do well in these Christmas markets, they can decide to be serious about it and start doing it full time. I would have loved to see what kind of shops they have here but I probably would have to wait until I came back.
