I only came to Reims because I knew that there are three UNESCO World Heritage sites here. However, I knew next to nothing about them when I came, not even how they look. So when the bus passed by them was truly amazed at the size and the beauty of these structures. It has been a while since I last traveled so maybe it is just a case of me being excited but these are UNESCO sites so it can’t just be me. The Cathedral of Notre Dame de Reims is by far the most popular of the sites. It is right in the center of the city and they even built a Christmas market outside it because how central this area is.
The size of the cathedral really gives you the impression that this is not just some church, in fact, you can see far enough there is still detail the further higher you go up the church. The inside is just as impressive. The gothic design imparts a sense of majesty to the place. The pillars supporting the sky high above and of course the stained glass windows. It is a shame that these are no longer the originals as they have been destroyed during the first world war but these have been recreated with just as much style as the originals. It is really amazing to think that the cathedral was almost leveled by the war. Indeed back then, arguments were put forward to make it a memorial instead of rebuilding it. Fortunately, the rebuilders won out and I am glad they did.
