Going to the Palace of Tau

Here I was carrying a heavy backpack walking all over the city of Reims. I walked from the Basilica of Saint-Remi to the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Reims which is another important structure in the city. Unfortunately, there is also a Christmas market right in front of it so it is very crowded. Not fun if you are carrying a heavy backpack with you. I decided to try to make my way to the cathedral first since it was still too early for dinner but it seems to be fenced off. To get there I needed to get out of the market and go in through a side entrance just for that. From here, you can see the sheer size of the cathedral, it almost looks like it is just as big as the basilica I went to before this.

I entered another gate here which I thought would bring me to the cathedral but it seems to be bringing me to another building right beside the cathedral. What I didn’t know was that there is a complex of important buildings here which surround the cathedral and back then it was one of the most important places in the city. The Palace of Tau sits right beside the cathedral and it was the seat of the archbishop of Reims. I was kind of surprised at this since I never thought that they would build big palaces like this for the archbishop. I guess it was really like this back then since the clergy were treated like royalty back then. What’s more is that the kings of France have a cozy relationship with the church and it is thus not surprising that they would be built palaces as well.
