Despite some initial hiccups finding a place to leave my luggage so I can easily tour Reims, I still managed to explore the magnificent Basilica of Saint-Remi which is part of Reim’s UNESCO World Heritage sites. I think I still have time, so I decided to keep going. I have a rough idea of where I need to go since the bus I took earlier passed by the sites on the way to the hotel. I was heading for the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Reims which is arguably Reim’s number one landmark. It too is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Earlier when the bus passed the cathedral, I made a note of where it is, it was still early afternoon and there weren’t a lot of people then.
It was already early evening and things have changed. There was a queue to get in the grounds of the cathedral now and I can see that there are already a lot of people here. What I didn’t know was that there is a regular Christmas market here and it is a popular place for locals and tourists alike. It was very inconvenient for me to go in because I was still carrying my backpack and I had to go through security before going in. They also enforce checks on COVID certificates but I don’t think they were doing it correctly. They were just scanning the certificates without checking against any form of identification. If people are really determined, people can easily copy the digital COVID certificate and pretend to be someone else.
