It was the end of my short break at the West Cork. I visited quite a lot of the places I wanted to see but they weren’t in the best conditions so I think I might end up coming back some other time. It is a challenge to get here since it is literally at the opposite end of where I was based. This morning was much better than it was so I don’t have to worry about lashing rain or blinding fog while I make the trip back. Along the way, I decided to take a lunch break at the pretty little village of Adare. I have always passed through this village but I never actually stopped. The closest thing to stopping I did was the bad traffic that seems to be present every time I pass through.
There is parking just behind the main road, so it was easy enough to access. Most of the interesting places here are along the main road so there is no getting lost. As you can see, Adare is known for its pretty thatched roof cottages. I have seen quite a few of these types of cottages elsewhere but I have never seen such a concentration like here in Adare. The cottages were built as part of the Dunraven estate all according to traditional Irish architecture. The most prominent feature of the cottages are of course the thatched roofs. The material is very good at wicking away water, so it isn’t as flimsy as it seems. It does need redoing every few years.
