Atlar Neolithic site is a nice side trip on my exploration of the Mizen Peninsula. I only had a few sites in mind when I was planning the trip so having this was a nice extra for me. It was all along the way, so I didn’t really waste time going here. I was intending to keep going south of Mizen Peninsula and I didn’t really need any satnav to know where to go. There are signs all over the place so I just needed to follow them until I literally can’t go any further. This was all at the southern end of Ireland and I had no idea how rugged it was.
At one point, the road started going higher. I realized that the fog was still there and I was worries that I won’t be able to see much if the road keeps going up. As I was driving, I noticed that there was a large beach that was being unveiled for me. Barleycove Beach is one of the popular beaches in the area and I can see why. The beach is a sheltered beach on both sides and there is a lot of sand to cover. This is similar to the other beaches that I have seen in West Cork, except that his one is probably one of the most spectacular ones. The view from the top really makes it more dramatic. It is a shame that there was rain at the time and it made visibility poor. Even so, I can see how it can be very beautiful if the weather is right.
