Growing up, I would read books that tell about Stonehenge. I would always think that it is just a mysterious place. After all, why would ancient peoples build stone circles. It seems that it has something to do with keeping track of the time, specifically the day of the year. Of course, I was a kid and I would think that UFOs would be far more interesting. Whatever reasons that I had for being fascinated with them, I would always dream of visiting these places. Stonehenge is probably one of the most famous of these stone circles but apparently there are a lot of these in Britain and Ireland.
Ireland doesn’t have any world famous stone circles but there are certainly a few high quality ones. In fact, West Cork has a very high concentration of these stone circles. One of the highest in Ireland. I won’t be going and visiting every single one of them but I think I would just go to one of the most well known ones here – the Drombeg Stone Circle. It is in a rather remote area in western Cork but still accessible by car. The stone circle can be accessed by a concrete path which eventually leads to a field. It is almost anticlimactic to actually get to the stone circle because, it just sits there and doesn’t really do anything. There are just rocks after all but you have to consider that these were put in place by ancient peoples living in this area and they are still standing to this day.
