As I got out of the car when I arrived at Galley Head. I was expecting to be able to see a lighthouse here but instead, there are old walls which seems to indicate that there is an old castle here. There weren’t any signs here about any castle but it seems that there was indeed a castle here. Dundeady Castle’s walls can be seen here from the parking area. It is currently used as the walls of a lighthouse which is built at the end of the headland. Unfortunately, the lighthouse is out of sight and it can only be seen from the water. I really feel bad about this. I understand the need to keep the lighthouses secure but at least give people a way to see them.
As far as I can see, only the walls of the old Dundeady Castle remain here. According to Google, the castle was an important fortress for the O’Cowhig’s who control the land back then. I am always curious why castles would be built in such remote and dangerous places. Was an approach from the sea that feasible back then? I think the seas would be very rough here and I won’t be surprised to know that there would be wrecks nearby. What’s more, there isn’t a modern day town nearby which I would imagine be near the castle. If there was, it is probably long gone by now.
