As one drives into the village of Timoleague, chances are the first structure one would see is the Timoleague Abbey. The Timoleague Abbey is one of the oldest strutures here in the village. The abbey dates back from the year 1240 and it is obviously seen more than it’s fair share of conflict. It was razed by the English at least twice, somehow leaving much of the core structure intact. Yes, the windows are long gone but you can still walk around the old abbey. The roof is long gone though, I suspect this has more to do with safety as you don’t want stuff falling on visitors. There is no entrance fee to see the ruins so I just walked right in.
There are paths around the ruins visitors can follow. I found it difficult to imagine what could have been here since there weren’t too many signs here informing visitors what they are seeing. There would be the odd tiny sign on the ground saying that the area is like a refectory. However, these are not all that common. The ruins, for the most part, are in decent condition. Unfortunately, there is still the random rubbish here and there. Indeed at the time of my visit there were visitors eating inside the ruins, I think it would be inevitable that there would be something left behind.
