Inch Castle is an almost 700 year old castle in Inch Island. Back then, it formed part of a defensive line of the O’Donnells, a prominent clan at the time. The castle is now in ruins, it is actually a bit of a shame since it occupies a great location on the Lough Swilly. The only way to access the castle now is via climbing trail to the left of the castle. It is best to watch your footing here as the trail is quite steep. The castle, while already in ruins, still retains a some structures. I can’t tell what it was before since there is nothing to tell me what is was.
I was surprised to see that there is still an enclosed structure here. The inside of the structure is damp and dark. There are a few portals here which let light in but I think this is all illuminated by fire back when. It is curious that there are smaller holes in the wall which go outside. I don’t know if these were done by design or just that the wall has collapsed. Looking at this, it is quite amazing to know that this is still standing after almost 700 years. The fact that they built the castle on elevated land ensures that rising sea levels won’t be able to touch it just yet.
