I heard about the village of An Port which was in Western Donegal. It seems that it has beautiful seascapes and even an old abandoned village. Who could resist not coming here. I decided to visit the village of An Port but I wasn’t exactly prepared for how remote this place actually is. An Port is at the end of a long and narrow row to what seems to be the very edge of the world. Villages have stopped popping up along the road and there were probably only a handful of houses that would be seen along the way. To call An Port a village might be too generous. So why would anyone come here?
For one thing the seascape here is beautiful. The beach itself isn’t that great since it is mostly a pebble beach. However, it makes up for it in raw, wild beauty. To the left there is a cliff. Apparently, there is a hiking trail which brings you all the way to Glencolumcille. I only found out because a couple just arrived from that trek. According to them, the trail was amazing so maybe some of you would want to try that out. Off the coast of the cliffs are several rocky islands just sticking out from the sea. To get a better appreciation of the place, there is a trail on the side of the mountain just behind the car park. I thought the trail was a little to steep for me as I would find myself having to clamber up the very steep slope. I can’t imagine how difficult it would be climb back down when gravity will be pulling you down. To the right of the trail are the remains of an old village. It can be hard to visualize now but An Port used to be a bustling village.
