When I was planning my visit to the Portnoo area of Western Donegal. I came upon this marker which points to a dolmen. A dolmen is a type of stone age tomb which is common in this part of Europe. I was surprised to know that there is one here in the Portnoo area. It is at the village of Kilclooney which can be accessed just by following the national road. The place was easy enough to find. As it can be clearly seen from the road. However, it is so far away. I followed Google Maps in locating the dolmen and I ended up at house which appears to be close enough to the dolmen. I wasn’t sure if this was the correct location. Google Maps would point you to this place and instruct you to start walking.
I obviously have qualms about trespassing into other people’s property. But this is not something I haven’t done before. In fact, it seems to be quite common to pass through farmlands to access certain places. I just wasn’t sure whether this is the correct location. I decided against trespassing here and I went back to the major landmark in town – church. It just so happened that there was another family which was visiting at the time and they told me where the actual path was. The path was to the left of the church itself. There is a path which will take you past a house, you will be trespassing here so make sure you don’t destroy their garden. Take the path on the right to avoid the garden and just keep on going. It will bring you past the farmlands and eventually the dolmen.
