The coast of Donegal never ceases to amaze me. Just when I thought that I have visited most parts of county Donegal, I would find out that there yet another place which I haven’t been to. I found out about this when I when to Maghera which has a huge beach. Apparently much of this area has been blessed with these beaches. Another one of these places is Portnoo. To the locals, Portnoo is probably best known for it golf course. However, it has that large beach too. The beach at Portnoo is as large as any of the others that I have seen here.
I don’t really know the reason why but it seems that the land around these parts have a lot of sand. I would imagine that millions of years of pounding by the Atlantic would produce this kind of landscape. I have also read that the Great Lisbon earthquake caused a tsunami that cause heavy silting of various parts of the country, possibly including Donegal. Following the national road, visitors can get a good view of Portnoo Beach. These types of places are best photographed from above via drone but I don’t have such a thing. Portnoo Beach is also considered a Blue Flag beach, which means is has a very high level of cleanliness and sustainability.
