Around Inch Beach

Inch Beach at Inch Island

Inch Beach at Inch Island

I am exploring Inch Island, which is an small island on the Lough Swilly. I was trying to look for a castle which is supposedly here but I couldn’t find it and I ended up at Inch Beach. The beach itself wasn’t really anything to write home about. There is seaweed strewn about and it makes the beach look much dirtier than it really is. I would have loved it if people would remove the seaweed but maybe it disturbs the local ecosystem or something. That doesn’t stop people from coming here to bathe. Lough Swilly is considered a fjord having formed from the last ice age. Because of its shape there aren’t any strong waves here unlike places like the Atlantic coast of Donegal. This makes Inch Beach the perfect place to go for a swim. The water will still be cold though.

Not too many people make it all the way here, certainly not massive crowds of tourists. You can also see that there a few houses that are nearby. There is one that stands out here and it is very near the shore. I don’t know if it is still in use but there was a car near it. I would probably be okay to park here for the rest of the day and just have a picnic. Inch Island isn’t exactly the most exciting place in Ireland. I can see that the road ends here at the beach as well, so I think I need to head back to continue my exploration of the island.
