When I first arrived in Ireland, I saw these sign about mass rocks. I always wondered what they were. Apparently, these were rocks where people would be coming to celebrate Holy Mass. This was when Catholicism was banned so people would have to secretly meet somewhere to celebrate Mass. There are numerous places like this all over the country and it turns out that Doon Well/Doon Rock area also has its own mass rock. I guess it makes sense to choose this place since this has been an important place for thousands of years. From the Doon Well, there is a nicely paved path which leads to the Mass Rock.
Although I know the path was built for the convenience of visitors, however I can’t help but feel that this place is not that special anymore. I imagined that this is a sacred and holy place but the path kind of ruins it. It does make visiting the area much easier and safer but you lose the air of mysticism. The path isn’t really that long, it does wind its way down the hill. I didn’t realized that we were high up until the area opened up to the view of the surrounding area. It wasn’t really that special, but it is still a view. There are also benches here for visitors especially for those who can’t walk that much. There are parts which become quite steep so the paved path really helps.
