When I first arrived at Ross Castle, I was looking for some parking space which is closer to the castle, obviously so I don’t have to walk far. I found a car park which was just across the castle and as I was pulling in, I was surprised to see that the car park was flooded. In fact, a few other car parks were similarly inundated. I was trying to figure out a reason why this is so. The first thing I thought about was tides, but I don’t think I have ever heard of lakes having tides, probably the larger lakes and have visibly higher tides but Lough Leane isn’t that large.
The only other explanation was that the recent rains might have caused all this. There was a storm not too long ago and I wouldn’t be surprised if the water was just too much. Add the fact that there was also melting snow from the mountains and you probably have yourself and abundance of water all of a sudden. Not everything is flooded though, there are parts which even have boats for fishing. If it was just flood, I don’t think I would see boats in that part of the park. Obviously, it is much deeper there compared to a car park. It was a strange sight to see swan swimming in a car park but it is one of the unique things I got to see in Killarney.
