Ross Castle is a nice little castle on the shores of Lough Leane in the town of Killarney. It occupies a very nice spot by the lake that you wonder why they would put a castle the lake. I know it is very pretty here so that could be one of these reasons. However, setting up a fort by the water is also a good defensive strategy since most enemies would be going in by land to attack. With Lough Leane being a lake, there won’t be attacks coming from the lake. Because of this, Ross Castle was considered to be inpregnable.
Such is the fame that there was a prophecy that Ross Castle could only be taken from the lake. Sure enough ships were built and dragged overland to Lough Leane and thus fulfilling the prophecy that Ross Castle be take only by a ship on Lough Leane. These days it is a tourist attraction while it is not possible to enter the castle interiors, people can still walk around the castle. On display here are cannons that we used back then. Apart from the cannon, there isn’t really much to see here. I would have like to go up the castle tower but it is off limits. I think the view from the castle tower would have been nice especially here by the shores of Lough Leane.
