When I was planning my tour of Killarney town, I saw that there is a Ross Castle here. It is not too far from the hotel but I would prefer that I just drive to it. It is a bit removed from the main town and it is rather quiet here. The castle is on the shores of Lough Leane though as I was going in for parking, I saw that the car park was underwater. I saw something similar here in Killarney National Park and I just attributed it to snow melt. Surely, they won’t build a car park where it would be underwater two times a day.
Ross Castle was built in the 15th century by the O’Donoghue family. I find it incredible that people would be able to trace their roots so far back as several hundred years. It seems that it would be easy in an island such as Ireland. The castle itself seems to be quite well preserved. Apart from the water which seems to be all over the place. I looks like one of your standard Irish castles. I understand that there are quite a few castles in county Kerry but this is probably the first one I have visited in the county.
