Chamber of the Mihrab

Chamber of the Mihrab

Chamber of the Mihrab

I successfully queued up and saw the Chamber of the Twelve Columns. It was a beautifully serene place. The chamber was richly decorated by the finest Moroccan craftsmen. I finally got out of the queue and moved on. I noticed too the that there was another opening not too far away from the Chamber of the Twelve Chambers. There seems to be a less visited chamber here which probably gets missed a lot. The Chamber of the Mihrab is one which is right next to the Chamber of the Twelve Column. In fact, there is an archway which leads directly to the next chamber from here. The Chamber of the Mihrab isn’t as richly decorated as the nearby chamber, but it has it is own unique characteristics.

The chamber is so named because of the presence of the mihrab which indicates the direction of prayer. There was another fence here can I can only look in from the outside. This was supposed to be used for prayer but was also eventually used as a mausoleum. You can have a look at the elaborate designs here. Apparently, this was the main entrance to the mausoleum however, the floor is now covered with the tombs. It seems that this wasn’t just the resting place of the Saadian dynasty sultans but also of the succeeding dynasty, the Alaouite.
