El Jadida doens’t seem to be that popular with most tourists probably because it is a bit off the beaten path. It is a quick train ride from Casablanca but from the looks of it, people mostly bypass this place. I got off the train and it seems that I was the only tourist coming here. Hopefully there are enough facilities here so that it doesn’t become that uncomfortable. The main attraction of El Jadida is the Portuguese City of Mazagan, now known as El Jadida. As you can tell from the name, this place used to be a occupied by the Portuguese but is now abandoned and taken over by the locals.
Like most fortified cities there are massive walls which surround the city. From the outside, the city doesn’t seem to be that large. The modern city of El Jadida is far larger now. It is mostly a tourist attraction but people are free to come and go here. While there are probably several gates here to get in the city. There is only one major gate to go through. The gate isn’t that large but it is just wide enough to allow a single vehicle to pass through. From the looks of it, I don’t have to walk very far to explore the Portuguese City, I think I would have a relaxing time here.
