Mausoleum of Mohammed V

One of the major sites to visits here in the city of Rabat is the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. Rabat is a pleasant mixture of old and new which made it a UNESCO World Heritage site. The mausoleum complex here is built opposite the Hassan Tower which was intended to be the tallest minaret in the world and the accompanying mosque the large in the world. This was way back in the 1100s. I was surprised to know that this mausoleum is actually a fairly recent structure. The structure was only completed in 1971. It seems this Mohammed V was so important that they put his mausoleum where the Hassan Tower is.

Closer Look at the Mausoleum of Mohammed V

Mohammed V was a king of Morocco but before that he was a powerful voice for the independence of Morocco from foreign powers. He was sultan before he was exiled by the French and got back the throne when he returned. He eventually successfully negotiated the independence of Morocco and is considered the father of the nation. No small surprise that he was buried here near Hassan Tower. The mausoleum is described to be of modern Alouite architecture. The white mausoleum is topped by a green roof. A lot like mosques I have seen here. I’m hoping that I could see the inside of the mausoleum since Mohammed V is not a religious figure so they may allow non-muslims to see it.
