I was quite happy that I found the bus which goes to Moulay Idriss from Meknès. I wanted to go to Volubilis but there is no public transport which goes there directly. I would have to find transportation from Moulay Idriss to Volubilis on my own. Unfortunately, there is no public bus from Moulay Idriss to Volubilis. I was very reluctant to hire a cab to go to Volubilis since I don’t want to haggle with the drivers. When I arrived at Moulay Idriss, I was left confused as to where I should go. Moulay Idriss isn’t really a place where tourists really go to, so signs are practically non-existent. Fortunately, much of Moulay Idriss follows one major road which goes up a mountain which makes it easy enough to remember.
I was let off at the top of the road but I couldn’t find anywhere to get a connection. I walked down the hill until I saw an area with a lot of taxis. I was pretty sure that this would be the place to hire a cab. I was hoping to hire the cab with someone else but there was no one else to share it with. I steeled myself as I was preparing to haggle with the driver but they seem to have a dispatcher who has a fixed price for the trip – a hundred dirhams for the round trip including an hour wait there. Not the best deal in the world, but I don’t think I would be able to get another deal. I was already there so I just accepted the deal.
The cab wasn’t a luxury cab either. It is quite rickety but it still moves. The driver doesn’t speak English but knows enough tourist-guiding to know to stop at certain places. He stopped by the road just as we can see Volubilis in the distance. The place seems to be larger than I thought, I wondered if I would be able to explore the entire place within an hour. That wasn’t all, he also pointed out Moulay Idriss in the distance which is shrouded in haze and I had difficultly making it out. I was glad he stopped here since I would get a nice look at Volubilis before we get there.
