The royal city of Meknès is not too far away from Fès. It is just a short hour away from Fès that some people would make it a day trip to visit Meknès. I would not do that and instead stay one night in Meknès. The historic area isn’t that large so I think there should be enough time for me to explore it. Besides, I’d prefer to keep moving towards my final destination rather than making side trips. I think I made the right decision since going around in Fès has stressed me out a lot. I heard that Meknès is a less hectic royal city so I think this would suit me more.
The first port of call for most visitors who are just commuting would be the Meknès Railway Station. The station itself is unremarkable. It is tiny but it serves the Fès to Marrakesh route so it is actually quite convenient. I hadn’t planned on how to get to the royal city itself. I looked at the map and it said, it is a 40 minute walk. I hadn’t really made up my mind yet when two ladies apparently from Russia asked me how I was planning to get there. It turned out that we would be staying at the same riad so they decided to come with me. They said they would walk with me, but I think they regretted going with me.
While there were actually cabs which where waiting outside the train station. My phobia of touts took over and I ended up deciding to just walk. In hindsight, since there would be three of us, we could have just taken a cab to the royal city and we would have gotten there in ten minutes. Oh well. We ended up walking along the main thoroughfare of the modern city of Meknès. My Russian companions were lugging along their luggage. It was probably not too bad yet, but large parts of the highway were under construction and there was no way but to literally walk on the highway itself. Parts of it were hair raising since some vehicles would pass quite closely. Fortunately, traffic was bad so the vehicle don’t really go that fast.
