Place Rcif

Bab Rcif in Fès

I crawled my way through the medina of Fès. Everywhere seems to be buzzing with activity. What I like about it is that it is not a place tourists but the locals really come here to buy stuff. It isn’t a living museum by any means since little has changed from hundreds of years ago. Sure, you have modern conveniences like mobile phones but once you are inside, you are pretty much transported back in time. Since it is not a primarily a place for tourists, signs aren’t very plentiful. As a result, I get lost several times as I walk through the medina. This time, I found myself in a very different area of the medina. This is Place Rcif.

Not too far from the Oued Bou Khrareb, a river which flows through the medina, I found another gate which leads outside. Bab Rcif is the gate which leads to the plaza here just outside the gate named Place Rcif. I was not surprised to see an open air market here in Place Rcif. You can see all sorts of stuff on sale here, clothes and even household products. Surely, tourists won’t be coming here to buy these things. You can see locals as they browse through the products on sale here. This seems to be good place to people watch and I think the locals also realize this. There are a few guest houses here including restaurants where people can rest and people watch. There are also a few snack stalls here, I think I need to take a look at what they have.
