Pitiful Lunch at Restaurant Assala in Fès

Pitiful Lunch at Restaurant Assala in Fès

It was already around lunch time and I found myself at the Museum of Andalusian Music. I liked it primarily because I get away from all the crowds in the medina of Fès. Obviously, I can’t spend the entire day here in the museum as I would miss out on a lot of other stuff. I was greeted by the guy who guided me to the museum and true to his word, he didn’t ask me for any money. I didn’t want to ask him for lunch tips and I decided to just look for one on my own. I’m sure I would be able to find a place here in the medina. I was randomly walking around the alleyways when I saw a place called Restaurant Assala. All it had was a sign and a flight up stairs leading up. I have not eaten inside the medina so I wasn’t sure if this was normal.

True enough, there was a full fledged restaurant upstairs. The interiors were naturally decorated with Moroccan designs and I thought it was quite nice. What stood out for me though was that there wasn’t anyone eating inside. I wasn’t sure if this was because the food was awful or I just got there early. I got a seat inside and I was just expecting great service since I seemed to be the only customer. The owner seemed to be friendly guy and I got myself some grilled meat for my lunch. The food took some time to prepare and it wasn’t because he was slow since he was working away at my food. I just charged it to the fact that he was doing everything from scratch which is why it took so long.

When the food finally came it was a huge disappointment. The grilled meat servings were small, tough and they weren’t tasty either. I thought the food was quite expensive compared to what was served me. The only saving grace was the Moroccan tea. If they still manage to screw that up then I think they would be better off doing something else. On the plus side, the owner gave me tips on where to go. I was interested in visiting the nearby tombs just outside the medina and I was hoping he would be able to provide me directions. As you would expect, the directions were vague and since I don’t live there, I don’t know any landmarks the locals would know. I eventually found my way there so maybe it helped.
