I have been walking around the medina of Fès but I still can’t make heads or tails as to which direction I was going. I was using the GPS to help get my bearings at least I would know which direction I should walk to. But as the streets wind their way through the medina, I would eventually get disoriented. Sometimes I would end up going in circles when I realized that I already passed that store once. It is through this “method” that I would stumble into interesting places. I knew that there were a few interesting places within the vicinity since there seem to be a lot of tourists in the area. I’m sure that there is something they would be brought to. Apparently, there is one here which is quite important.
The Cherratine Madrasa is a Quranic school or one where you study the Quran. It was built in the year 1670 and it looked so ordinary from the outside that I passed it several times. If there weren’t a lot of tourists here I wouldn’t have known of the importance of this place. The Cherratine Madrasa like most madrasa are off limits to non-Muslims. I still don’t get this since you’d think you’d want people to know more about the faith. Anyway the main gate of the madrasa is impressive and it is even more impressive you get a chance to peek through the doors. Sometimes the doors would be open so you can have a look inside. This is the first time I have been to these schools and I was impressed at how ornate they can be.
