I wasn’t prepared for the massive amount of Islamic architecture that I would see in Fès. I knew that Fès is known for its medina but I thought that just meant that it is a massive marketplace. However, that is far from the case. People actually live here and you would expect everything to be built in the medina like mosques and schools. Mosques are particularly plentiful considering how dense this place already is. It is also hard to miss them since there would be haunting calls to pray every few hours. There is a lot of Islamic art to be appreciated here. I have always admire their style since it is basically a combination of basic shapes and probably rotated to form a pattern.
The designs you can see here have a certain simplicity and elegance which lends to you looking for more. It is actually hard to tell which ones here are old since this place has been in use for several hundreds of years. A lot of times, it is difficult to appreciate these places since there would be touts and vendors in your face. Granted that it is you who is intruding into their place, I think it would still be nice to give the guests a little more space. On the downside, a lot of these places go nameless and I won’t be able to find them again even if I tried.
