I arrived in Fès late in the afternoon and I wasn’t really prepared to get lost in the medina this time of the day. I thought that maybe it would nice to go outside and see what it is like there. The Medina of Fès is quite well known. In fact, it is a UNESCO world heritage site. What I do not know about is how it is outside the medina. I’m pretty sure that the city of Fès has outgrown the medina. Outside the medina, it makes me realize how developed this place actually is. The roads here are very nice as they run alongside the centuries old medina. What’s more is that they seem see be reeady for tourism as there are signs which point to some interesting places.
I only planned on going in the nearby city to see what modern Fès looks like. There are a lot of people on the street. A lot of them were just making their way to the medina. I guess it is something like a shopping center for them but in fact they are just continuing what their ancestors have done for hundreds of years. The medina is the center of activity in Fès and if you want to go enjoy yourself. The medina is the place to be. This part of Fès appears to be much more organized than the medina. The streets are wider and there are significantly less shops here. It appears like it is more a residential area rather than a full blown medina like old Fès is.
