I finally went in the main tower of the kasbah in Chefchaoen. This is a 15th to 16th century fortress which was meant to fend of invasions by the Portuguese and Spanish. It thought it was a bit odd to just protect the kasbah area when you should be protecting the entire city. If the defenders end up surrounded there is nowhere they could run to. The kasbah has multiple functions. The ground floor was apparently a prison. There wasn’t much literature here at the site and I just assumed this from what I was seeing. The upper levels of the tower were more pleasant.
For me, I was just happy that I was finally out of the rain. I couldn’t believe that the weather would be so wet here considering that it was in Africa. I obviously overgeneralized by thinking the entire continent was one massive desert. This area of Morocco can be quite cold and wet. This was the time when the weather also changes, that probably explains why it was so miserable that day. The tower has views of the surrounding area, great if you are looking out for enemies. The windows here were surprisingly large since it would have been dangerous if enemies could easily shoot arrows through the windows. Maybe this wasn’t a concern back then.
