The Going to the Sun Road is a marvel of engineering built in the 1930s which connects West and East Glacier. Building a long road is already a difficult undertaking, but building it across very difficult terrain is on a totally different level. The beauty of Glacier National Park is already known back then but it was difficult to get there because it is in the middle of mountains. It was then proposed that a road which cuts through the mountains be built to make traveling easier. It is considered the first road which was designed for tourists on vehicles. The road has numerous stops for sightseeing. Fortunately, the important ones are clearly marked and very convenient.
As you can see, this mountain road is high up and the road would be closed every winter because of snow. You can imagine how difficult this road would be to plow because of the sheer amount of snow that falls here. It can also be very dangerous since there is always the danger of avalanches. These avalanches would regularly destroy parts of the road which is why the road requires frequent maintenance. Prior to coming here I was worried that the road might be closed before I get there. It was the time when the weather turns much cooler and the threat of sudden snow storms can suddenly close parts or the entire road altogether. Fortunately, this was something I managed to avoid by a day!
