Blacksod Lighthouse is at the very end of the Belmullet Peninsula. The unassuming lighthouse guards the entrance to Blacksod Bay which stretches all the way to Belmullet several kilometers away. The shape and size of Blacksod Bay make it an ideal point to set up a port. Not too far away from Blacksod Lighthouse, is a small port where fishing boats and depart. At the time of my visit, there were students being trained by jumping in the water. Maybe it is survival skills or first aid but I don’t think I would willingly jump into the cold water.
There is a small white sand beach not too far away from the port. It seems that it is low tide at the moment and some of the boats here are stuck in the sand. Then again, they don’t look like they need to go anywhere. There was a nice red ship which stood out against the sky. It made for a nice photo. You can see how slow life is here. Not to say that life is that fast paced in the rest of the country. Most of the people I see here seem to be curious tourists. Most of them hoping to be able to get in Blacksod Lighthouse but can’t.
