Arguably, one of the best places to visit here in Achill Island is the remote Keem Beach located at the western end of the island. The trip to Keem Beach itself is already an experience. Most visitors would probably come here using their town transportation. The road hugs the hill as its winds its way west to Keem Beach. Along the way there are several stopover points where you can take photos of the area including the looming Keem Beach. I like how you can get a great view of Keem Beach from above. The road then steeply descends down to the beach.
The beach itself is one protected on three sides by hills. This makes the waters of the beach calm compared to the more open type of beach like nearby Keel Beach. Although, Keem Beach is one of the highlights of a visit to Achill Island, there weren’t as many people here compared to Keel. There are no establishments here like hotels or restaurants. There is a parking area above with a restroom, but that is all the facilities you can get here. The point here is to take in the beauty of the white sand beach at Keem. You do get that remote and isolated feel. I am sure that on some days, you probably would get the whole beach all to yourself.
