Achill Island is Ireland’s largest island. I have been to a few islands in Ireland but this is just the second time that I have managed to bring the car along. There is a bridge which connects Achill to the mainland which makes it very easy to bring a car to the island. This also explains why the roads of Achill are in good condition compared to the others I have been to. These are no highways, but I won’t consider them dirt roads either. As you might expect, there are roads which bring visitors to the most popular points in the island. I was exploring the roads of Achill to see what is there to see.
The roads get much quieter as you get out of the village of Keel which seems to be the center of activity in Achill. There are a few nameless beaches along the way but after that, the road starts climbing. The western end of Achill is hillier and the road follows the hills as well. There are some stopping points where you can take in the view of the Altantic Ocean. I like how they built the road and providing some places to stop to admire the view. This makes it easier to explore the place especially they already picked the nice spots for you.
