It seems that it would be very convenient if you have your own vehicle when visiting Achill Island. There is a bus service that but it is quite infrequent, not to mention inconvenient. Achill Island is Ireland’s largest island, so one could imagine having to hike from one end to another. I passed by a few tourists on the way somewhere and I can’t imagine how long it would take them to get to their destination. As for me, I was zipping through the Achill countryside in the car. From Dugort, there is a route I can take which can bring me to most of the interesting spots in Achill.
Slievemore is a mountain which dominates the landscape here at Dugort. I saw the mountain from The Strand Hotel and it is actually built at the foot of the mountain. What I didn’t realize was The Strand Hotel was on the end of length of Slievemore. It turned out that Slievemore is quite elongated and there are a few villages scattered around the area of the mountain. Some of them have been deserted and I would be visiting one of them. I would imagine it to be quite creepy since it would be a village with no people.
