As soon as I arrived at The Strand Hotel in Achill Island. I decided to start exploring the island immediately. It would be difficult to get around Achill Island. There is a bus service which even goes to The Strand Hotel but I didn’t see it. There is a schedule for the bus but I just don’t feel it comes frequently enough. To best see Achill Island, it is recommended that you have transportation of your own. I would see tourists walking down the road in Achill and I kind of feel sorry for them since they didn’t bring their own car. But I also have other plans so I can’t really take them in.
Achill Island has a lot of ruins scattered all around. It is probably unsurprising since this place seems to be very sparsely populated. There used to be more though, more on that in future posts. One of the nearest landmarks here is an old church not too far away from the Strand Hotel. There is a small path from the main road to the church but you would need to find proper parking outside the gate. I had to park just by the side of the road, hopefully I don’t cause too much traffic. Fortunately, traffic is light in this part of the island, that people would just go around any parked cars.
