I had to use a days leave off work and I was trying to figure out where to go. I didn’t really feel like I had time to go abroad, so I thought it would be better to just explore some parts of Ireland I haven’t been too. One of these places that I have heard of is Achill Island. I know that it is Ireland’s largest island. It is off the coast of country Mayo but it is still a good four hour drive from here. I am not familiar with this part of the country so I thought it would be a good place to explore.
The road to Achill Island it mostly well paved roads. This is no motorway but it is nice enough for a good road trip. I saw some signs to familiar sounding places like Westport and Castlebar but I would be heading somewhere further west. I found out that Achill Island, wasn’t really that far from the mainland. In fact, one could just walk across the narrow body of water separating it from the main island of Ireland. I was wondering how it could be called an island when it is that close to the mainland. There is a short bridge which crosses the water allowing vehicles easy access to the island.
