Lungshan Temple is one of the most well known Buddhist and Taoist temples in Taipei. I would like to think that having been built in 1738, it would be the oldest template in Taipei. While it is certainly one of the oldest around, the temple has been built and rebuilt multiple times over time. The causes of damage to the temple were either natural through earthquakes or man-made through World War II. Despite all that the temple has been through, the people of Taipei have consistently rebuilt the temple. So while it is certainly one of the oldest temples around, most of it is no longer the original structure.
As with most of southeast Asia. The people of Fujian province in China migrated across the straits to found a new settlement here in Taiwan. There were believers of the original Lungshan Temple in their hometown and upon moving to Taiwan, they built another Lungshan Temple. Looking at the temple, it oozes with old, Chinese temple charm you won’t think that this wasn’t the original structure. These days, the Lungshan temple is a very busy place for worship as well as tourism. It is refreshing to see that this is still a living an breathing temple amid all the modernity of modern Taipei.
