Castelo de São Jorge is a very interesting piece of heritage in Lisbon. The Moorish castle stands above the city of Lisbon and it really does make an imposing sight. What is immediately visible from afar at the walls which surround the castle. Walls are part and parcel of a medieval castle and Castelo de São Jorge is no different. The walls are typically very high to prevent invaders from merely climbing up the walls. Additionally, defensive structures are built on top of the walls such battlements which allow defenders to fire back in relative safety. The walls would also be built with wider bases so enemies cannot dig under the wall and undermine the integrity of the wall. There are also walkways along the top of the walls which allow defenders to be mobile. Finally, there are towers built as additional defensive structures.
Castelo de São Jorge is not a huge castle by any means but it looks pretty intimidating. As one makes their way through the castle grounds you still get that sense of being inside a fortress. The walls look even higher from inside. Visitors can go in the castle and have a look at the walls of the castle. The walkways along the walls are open for exploration so you can get an idea of how it was back then. There is also an audio visual presentation in on of the rooms but there were too many people at the time so I couldn’t watch.
