While the Pena Palace is the last place we visited in Sintra, it is by no means the least of these heritage sites. In fact, among the heritage sites here in Sintra, this is probably the most impressive one for me. The Pena Palace is built on top of a hill and it has sweeping views of the national park where Sintra is in as well as view of nearby Lisbon. In a sense, we were quite lucky to have visited Pena Palace so late in the day. Because of this, most of the visitors who visit Pena Palace would have already left, leaving the palace all to ourselves. The sun was already starting to go down and it illuminated the palace.
It is interesting to know that a lot of people from Lisbon would remember the colorful Pena Palace as a dull gray colored palace. It really used to be quite colorful but as the years went by, the color faded until it became gray. It was only relatively recently that the palace was repainted in its original colors. The kings of the time had very strange tastes in design and architecture. It is probably okay to just imitate a style but to combine several styles into one structure is probably too much for me.
