I had a great day exploring the Belém district of Lisbon. I visited the UNESCO World Heritage sites of the Jerónimos Monastery as well as the famed Belém Tower. The Belém seems to be a very historic district which is why the important structures are here. There is still the old town area of the city but I would probably leave that for another day. I would be calling it a day and I decided to head back to the hotel. The heat has really sapped my strength and I just want to go back and cool down. But before that, I thought I should just have dinner before leaving.
Being a tourist area, there are a number of restaurants in the area. I walked back to where the bus stop was and looked for a restaurant here. I don’t really know which one would be better so I just picked one at random – Restaurante Belém 2 a 8. Okay, I don’t know what the name means but I just want to have some food. This time, I ordered what a friend of mine has been raving all this time – sardine! Don’t get me wrong, I actually like sardine, even if it comes from a can. Actually, I never eaten any sardine that didn’t come from a can. Sardine is one of Portugal’s famous products and they have it in abundance. Fried sardine isn’t exactly that glamorous sounding, after all, how good can you make sardine taste? Turns out, pretty good. The sardine came out just perfectly fried. The fish is lightly salted but you can tell how it makes a huge difference in the taste. It is obviously much larger than the ones in the tin. This also means that bones are larger as well. Though I am no fan having to sieve through the bone for the sardine meat, I thought it was a very nice fish. Now, if they can only figure out how to make it boneless, then I will be all in.
