It was already late afternoon and I was trying to make my way to the Belém Tower near the end of the promenade. As expected, it was a pleasant place to walk but the afternoon sun was really saps the strength out of you. I was slowly making my way to the tower when I ran into some interesting structures along the way. One thing in particular caught my attention and that is the Belém Lighthouse. For a lighthouse, it didn’t seem to be very tall. It has a characteristic red stripes made of red bricks to make it more visible and it looks old.
I would much later find out that the lighthouse was never functional and it seems to be just decorative in purpose. I guess it was part of the decorations installed as part of the promenade area. It was rather strange that they would install something like that somewhat near the Belém Tower and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos. Maybe someone thought that it would be nice to build something like that just to keep in line with the age of discovery theme which the promenade has. The lighthouse doesn’t do anything so I just kept walking. Maybe I would see something more interesting.
