I was glad that I head out to the historic center of Évora once more just to cool down in the hotel. It was much cooler and thus much more enjoyable to explore the beautiful city of Évora. Already, I visited one of the most important sites in Évora and that is the Church of Saint Francis where the Chapel of Bones is located. I can’t imagine coming here and not seeing this rather ghastly chapel. There are probably other places here which are important and worth visiting. I ended up at the main square of Évora and that is Giraldo Square. I know that this is the main square since a lot of the city buses would have this destination displayed in front.
There wasn’t any real need to take the bus since everything seems to be within walking distance. I eventually ended up in Giraldo Square and every self respecting square in Europe would have a large church attached to it. I was surprised that that the church wasn’t the Cathedral of Évora which I visited earlier in the day. Instead, the church here is a more modest one – San Antão Church. This rather ordinary looking church is surprisingly old, with construction having started in 1557. It was rather bright inside the church with the walls and ceiling painted white.
