Lunch in Évora

Lagarto de Porco Preto

Lagarto de Porco Preto

It was a very warm day and quite exhausting to be exploring the city of Évora that time of the year. It was a shock to my system since I have gotten used to much cooler weather that I wasn’t used to this anymore. I would dart in and out of establishments to get some cooler weather but the people here don’t seem to mind it. It was time for lunch and much as I wanted to sit indoors, there weren’t any seats inside. Fortunately, there was some outdoor seating with shade and I quickly obliged.

I already had a few meals here in Portugal and I think the food here is fantastic. It isn’t especially fancy, in fact, I would even say that the food is quite simple. But they make up for it in taste. In other cases, they make up for it in shock value. I was going through the menu and I saw a menu item which piqued my interest. Lagarto de porco preto with the shocking translation of black pork lizard. Now, what on earth could that be. I inquired about it and I was told that it was just a name but it is pork. I naturally ordered it and what came out was the most tender grilled pork I have ever had. The pork comes from black skinned pigs which is common in this area. I surmised that the lizard part of the name came from the shape of the strips which is similar to a house lizard. Now, I would never look at pork the same way again.
