It is funny how I probably have seen most of the Cathedral of Évora except for the main area of the cathedral itself. I have been to the choir. I have been to the cloister of the cathedral. I have even been up the roof of the cathedral. It is probably because of the strange way the tour of the cathedral was laid out that the roof turned out to be my first stop. True, I could have probably head straight to the main church, it was probably easier to go to the top first then explore the rest later.
I noticed that the cathedral was quite dark. Gothic cathedrals tend to be dark because of the limited number of windows they usually have. I wasn’t sure of the reason for this but perhaps it helps build an atmosphere of serenity that it would be easier to pray. I think it does help since you won’t be distracted by what is outside and instead focus more on worship. The Cathedral of Cathedral of Évora is large enough to have several chapels which round the inside of the cathedral. Unfortunately, the chapels can be quite dark that it was difficult to appreciate them in their entirety. Some of the chapels are even separated by a gate to visitors and even the faithful can only look on from the outside.
