It seems that Évora has a lot of hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. There are a number of old structures which have been preserved very well. When I continued on to the eastern reaches of the old city, I came across another old structure. I wasn’t sure what it was but I saw a sign which said this is the University of Évora. It certainly doesn’t look like a university since there weren’t a lot of students around. Maybe there was a school break or a public holiday which might explain the lack of students.
The University of Évora is considered to be the second oldest university in the country. The university was run by the Jesuits. Unfortunately, this made them the target of Marquis de Pombal who disliked their perceived power. The university eventually was shutdown with the Jesuits being arrested or exiled. It won’t reopen until after two hundred years. This seems to be an interesting place had it been open. People were only taking photos of the university from the outside. It was just my luck that it wasn’t open. I think there are still other establishments here worth visit that I would completely forget about it.
